    Dragonlance

Does anyone know a good book that would have lots of pictures of kender, elves, etc. I have been thinking about doing a group costume contest entry with my kiddos. I'm thinking Elijah could be a kender. Miranda could be an elf. Joshua could be a dwarf. I could be human. Ilea could be....another kender? I don't know. I'd have to look at heights and stuff. One problem with Elijah as a kender though is he definately does not have a top knot. With wishful thinking maybe I could even get Tom to be a paladin for me. Not bloody likely that last one. He's such a grump.

Edit: Hmm, maybe I should look at my copy of Races of Ansalon... Silly Sephera.

I don't have a copy to reference and see if it has artwork in it, but try Leaves of the Last Home... or the Dragonlance supplement for D&D 3.0...or just google search Dragonlance artwork. I can't remember the name of the primary artist for the series.

Larry Elmore is a big Dragonlance artist, here's his website: http://www.larryelmore.com/ And the gaming books have some good pictures in them as well. This sounds like a totally cute idea Wink

    Re: Dragonlance

I know. I have one of his books that he autographed. Wink I also have just about every resource book for the Dragonlance campaign. Then there's all the book covers...

I'm trying to get an idea of height of a gnome in comparison to height of a kender. Elijah may end up being a gnome and Ilea may end up being the Kender. I don't know yet.

    Re: Dragonlance

I don't think there's much of a height difference, difference is in build and demeanor-both have lots of energy, but kender have youthful faces and a light build, while gnomes look like old men(or women), with a more stocky build, or so I've always imagined Wink I think Ilea would make a cute kender, not sure about Elijah-is he walking a lot? You could always make a minotaur costume for him!

Thank you, thank you! Now to have the actual result. Will it be or not be, that is the question. Big Smile Five costumes (Six if I can hog tie my husband) and 6 months until GenCon. Can she do it, ladies and gentlemen? We'll just have to wait and see.

    Re: Dragonlance

    Sephera dear,

    As for heights:
    Humans: Height: 5'1" - 6'8".

    Dwarves: 3'2" - 4'1".

    Elves: 4'8" - 5'6".

    Gnomes: 3'3" - 3'8".

    Kender: 3'2" - 4'4".

I did a google search for Kender height and found a dragonlance page with the specs for those. So I just copied and pasted race/height for you. Hope that helps.

Thanks! That's perfect! Elijah might be able to pass as a gnome. Or I could have him as a second kender. The only problem is he won't have a topknot. LOL!

    Ilea is currently about 3'6"
    Joshua is currently about 4'2"
    Elijah is currently about 2'5"
    I'm 5'5"
Miranda won't let me measure her, but she's still a little shorter than me.

So, Joshua will be a little tall for a dwarf, but I think that fits his personality best. I'll have to talk with Ilea and Miranda to see what they want.

Izzy, yes, I would love pattern suggestions. Big Smile. You too, DD if you know of some. Wink

Edit: Nearly forgot. Yes, Elijah is walking. Walking ALL over the place and in to plenty of mischief, too. I'm still not sure whether to do a gnome or a kender with him. What do y'all think?

    Re: Dragonlance

    Pattern suggestions for the kiddies:

    Simplicity 4944, size A includes childrens 3,4,5,6,7,&8
There are four outfits, two are long dresses for girls, empire waisted with long draped sleeves. Then there are two outfits for boys, one is a pirate with coat, pants, neckerchief and belt; the other is a soldier with fabric 'breastplate', helmet, cape, faux boots and bracers. I have a feeling you might have this pattern though...

Simplicity 3680, size A includes childrens 3-8 as previous pattern
It shows five outfits, all made out of the same dress with a combination of overshirt, corset-belt, and pantaloons-ideas shown are witch, hippy, mini pirate wench, cowgirl, and pixie-I could see some of these as working for a little kender.

Simplicity 3614, size A include girls sizes 7,8,10,12,14
Not sure if this would work but throwing it out there-very similar to 3680 but for big girls, with lacing around the waist instead of overskirts and corset-belts, dress has empire waist and gathered then draped sleeves in most, also pants and skirt. Costume ideas pictured are catgirl, pixie, slumber party girl, gypsy girl, witch, and native american girl. I think the gypsy or pixie could also work(minus wings and wand for latter) for an elf ;)

These are what I have(with intent to make stuff for nieces) that might also work for you-there are more I may look up later, and add links to photos, working off pattern envelopes on my table, not website on my desktop.

    Re: Dragonlance

First thought was kender, with those lifted eyebrows, but after more thought, and looking at that cute chin, I think gnome would work also-but you know all gnomes have to have goggles right? That would be adorable!

    Re: Dragonlance

By the shape of chin and the high forehead, I would vote for gnome.

If you could get him to wear a wig of unkempt looking hair, he could get by as a Kinder with those eyes, but he looks like a natural gnome to me.

If you turned the dryer up higher and left him in longer than the clothes, you might be able to go with a very short dwarf.  Besides he's doing a terrible job of folding those clothes anyway.

After seeing pic, Definitely Gnome!!! He'd look so cute with a red pointed hat atop his head.

I have no idea what a Kender is dear. So if you can post or link pics I'd be happy to make pattern suggestions. :)

Alas, dirtdazzy, the gnomes of the Dragonlance world are not those that we are familiar with of the fey. No pointy red hats for them.

Dragonlance gnome: (although I know I've envisione them without beards)

    Re: Dragonlance

My dear DD... you are thinking of Lawn Gnomes or the run of the mill Garden Gnomes. The Dragonlance (or D&D in general) gnomes are very short, very inquisitive and often fond of pranks. Most of them have innate illusion magic and the DL ones are especially fond of inventing. However they love to indulge in inventing, it us usually by way of Rube Goldberg. A loom would take up 2 rooms and run on a combination of steam and hydrolics.

They would make an automatic door opener which requires a minimum of 98 parts, 75% of which must be moving parts.

Yes, he would make a cute garden gnome. I just don't know how long he'd keep the hat on. Wink

Although, the outfit wouldn't differ very much for a garden gnome. If I can just get him to not spill food on his clothes I could use the same costume for two different costumes! For the Dragonlance gnome, I give him a "leather" smock with lots of pockets and tools. For the garden gnome, I take away the smock and tools and give him a pointy hat.

I am having quite a difficult time coming up with a good picture of a Dragonlance gnome. Any suggestions?

http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/ph35_gallery/PHB35_PG27_WEB.jpg from the handbook. Not DL, but standard (I think Forgotten Realms is the default setting.)

http://www.wowwiki.com/images/d/d9/GnomeMale.jpg From WoW... but still close to D&D.

You are right, finding pictures of them online is difficult. There are hundreds of pictures of the fairytale variety and yard gnomes, but very few RPG gnomes.

This will probably have to wait until it gets mod approval, but hopefully this will help some.

    Re: Dragonlance

After seeing that last one I just couldn't help but think you could alter a premade/cheap bob the builder costume for the gnome. ANd you could probably get some kids swimming goggles and paint them black for the working goggles. So there could be relatively little sewing neccessary for the costume.
