crownglass39 - Glad to meet you. I have a question about the pole you are bringing. Is it a Peek-a-Boo pole? The "upgraded" Carmen Electra pole? Or a true portable dance pole, like from Platinum Stages?

Les, your knowledge on the topic is rather....  (Can't think of an answer which would be appropriate). First cage dancing, now an intimate knowledge of pole dancing... whips and chains... we might have to start a Les worshiping thread.

A great exercise, and I hope you all have fun working out. I've even seen articles with older women doing this, so it is definitely a workout than anyone can enjoy. If I remember correctly, this counts as a low-impact workout.

I will be bringing either a Platinum Stage pole or one very similar. Personally, I don't trust the easily removable kind. That is not to say that they're not a good product, but I'm not about to do an invert on something that I don't know without a shadow of a doubt can't be pulled down. (I will NOT be teaching inverts at the Gen Con class.)

The downside to the Platinum Stage is that there is much more "stuff" for me to haul to Indy, and a greater set up time, but I feel the safety outweighs the inconvenience.

AT - BOW DOWN TO ME, FOOLISH MORTAL! Wink

CG39 - I'm glad to hear you're bringing a Platinum. That's what they had at the classes I took. The regular Peek-A-Boo is NOT suitable for much but posing beside it. The new Carmen Electra you can supposedly do tricks, including inverts, but I definitely wouldn't want to use it in a classroom situation.

I have a Lil Minx semi permanent that I use at home and at the studio I use either a permanently installed brass or chrome pole. I've heard good things about the X Pole, although I don't know that I'd trust even that in a classroom setting. (I might get one at home just because it spins.)

I am the first to admit that I'm a little paranoid about safety...

I've never used anything but a fixed pole. I saw the spin option at Platinum and thought that might be cool. I bet it's easier for some tricks to just hold on and let the pole spin than to try to find the perfect balance between a tight and loose grip with your hands.

I'm going to have to just start avoiding this thread. So many things can be taken in so many wrong ways. And it doesn't get any better as time goes on, either.

And Les, I'm changing my Siggy for you.

I agree! If you learn how to spin on a fixed pole, it is no problem to transfer the moves on a spinner. However, if you learn on a spinner it is exponentially more difficult to learn how to spin on a fixed. Gives sit and spin an new meaning... Wink

Besides, I get a hell of a lot of torque going on my brass pole, I can't imagine how fast that would have me going on a spinner and cleaning puke off the pole is not sexy for anyone involved.

We should figure out a time/place at Gen Con for a pole dance discussion group for the people who already are in love with pole dancing. I know it still has a "reputation" which some people have a hard time getting past, but it definately is becoming a more accepted fom of exercise and entertainment.

Actually, the centrifical force would mean that it isn't the pole that, well, um, I've said too much already....

    Re: Pole Dancing!

Actually Vallan, the Centripetal Force WOULD mean that the pole would need to be wiped down, I think you are thinking of Centrifugal Force, the reaction in opposite of the Centripetal Force. This reaction would force said material AWAY from the pole, and thus out into the crowd. This is a result of our existing on a motion based system (rotating earth).....ahhhh....okay, wait....

this was NEVER about the Physics...was it???.....ohhhhhhh....my bad Geeked

    Please continue...

Even if we don't get a "formal" group together, feel free to stop by my booth in the Exhibit Hall and chat. I've only had a few lessons, but hope to take more in the near future. I really want a pole at home but haven't decided on a good place for one. And it has to be the removable type, so I can take it down when my father visits. Confused

That sounds like a great idea...I'd participate, I'd even bring my pole so that you we could demonstrate any tricks that you we know...

Speaking of which, I have this friend, Newt (not to be confused with Knuteski), who's looking to rent a pole in mid-August in Indianapolis...anyone know where he can get one?

Check ebay to buy, but searching for rentals is more difficult... besides, this might be borderline on the buying / selling rule. Just remember, when in doubt, check ebay.

If you were exerting torque, wouldn't that have more to do with your grip on the pole, which normally would slow you down since friction is the detractor of velocity? V= S-Ff or something like that where V=velocity, S=speed, F=coeficient of force and f= friction. Get used to the nerd posts.

As far as I know, few people will rent out a pole due to the liability involved. Good luck.

In case you're interested, the equation more useful to most pole dancers is one that calculates the static frictional forces which can be found by:
    fS = µS*N (force) (5)
Where is fS static friction, is µS the coefficient of static friction, and N is normal force.

I regularly attent Gen Con, this is just the first year I am teaching pole class. I can get you more equations related to the physics of pole dancing if you're THAT interested.

If it didn't say you were from Michigan, I would think you were my friend from back in Frederick, MD. Physics Genius, that girl...

Throw in a situational seminar on kinetic friction forces applications to overcoming centripetal resistance...and I'm there!!!  lol.

Sounds like a great class, good luck and thanks for bringing this to GenCon!!
