    Re: Queen of Geeks Pageant

The winner was Andrea, she was "Deodorant Girl".  It was a close race, but she was the winner.

As for how it went.... Considering it was the first time for us, I'm not going to sugar coat it, it went a little rough (a lot rough in some places).  But, now we know what not to do and learned how to streamline things.  Next year, Lord willing, it will be A LOT smoother.

For the record, I would really like to thank the 6 ladies who stepped forward to be in the first pageant.  They were all winners for me.  It takes guts to come up on stage in front of complete strangers and show the world who you are, what you have, and that you are a person worth noticing and knowing.  These ladies were all wonderful.

For now, we are planning next year's pageant.  I actually can't wait to see what wonderful women show up next year.

Next year, we'll make sure we have a working microphone! the second one we got worked, but the first one cut in and out (mostly out)

but if you ever miss entering, you are encouraged to join us in the audience!Big Smile

And the crowns should get more and more interesting as the years go by! Wink

so, can you help me out with a new crown design? Pulp didn't even use the one I brought. *shrug*.

I have visions of using an old video game controller as the two front peaks with clear dice  drilled and mounted for the jewels. :-) a little more generic than a tri-force Big Smile

The harvest head-dress did work well, but I think that having a crown made of gamer stuff would be a bit more apropriate, no? Big Smile

Yeah I totally agree on the crown design.  Maybe just using some wire, beads, and make areas for little items to dangle, like small dice, or other little findings like charms related to gaming and the various aspects of geekdom.

I want to do it again next year though.  It was a blast.  I just wish the trivia portion was explained better in the beginning with the passes and all.  And that there were a few more categories, since there are so many different types of geeks.  I was hoping the surveys we turned in would help create those trivia categories.  Maybe next year can we have categories for Stargate, Firefly, video games, etc.  And hopefully the anime trivia will come from more than just the same series' next year, and maybe even some questions on graphic novels.  *^_^*  There are just so many genres within anime alone to keep going on 1 series that might not appeal to the person answering questions.

I have some friends in the anime industry, VA's and producors, and script editors that I can put someone in contact with if they would like help with the anime/manga categories.  If me being there friend is a conflict of interest, I can always just volunteer to help out next year.  Maybe even offer to do the intermission show while the judges are making their decisions?  I just want to participate cause I had so much fun!

    Re: Queen of Geeks Pageant

I am SO glad you had fun...All you ladies were FANTASTIC!  As for helping next year...we'll see.  Kennetha is the boss.  We haven't had a chance to talk about this year's event yet, but I'll sure let you know.  Having someone to fill in time during the "intermission" sounds like a very good idea to me.  As I said, we'll see.  Thanks so much for the offer!!!

You weren't the only one flummoxed by the trivia round.  So was I.  Everything came up so quickly that I couldn't keep up (both personal life, business life, and Gen Con life), so I wrote questions literally the night before.

Not so next year.  I have already planned MANY different categories, much more focused on the GEEK factor.  I have to go over my ideas with the boss, but I'm sure she'll agree on the changes. She's a great lady (must suck up to boss).  Mostly on point value.  As I know more, I'll let everyone know...either here or in the new 2009 thread...(as the forums get recycled every year and they retire sections).  We'll keep you posted!!!

So, having learned from our mishaps (everything is a learning experience) we will have one bang-up pageant next year.  Our biggest worry was the talent portion, but that was the part that went the smoothest.  Just goes to show you that anything can happen LIVE and on stage.

    So...until next time....

Bundy is right, things will be better next year.   This year was very frustrating, but we're working on it.

I would appreciate help during the intermission next year.  Purhaps a Q&A with the audieance and ice breaker games.  If I can get some parodies, I wouldn't mind doing  the sing-a-long again.

To give you an idea of the the chaos that went on, there were actually 5 crowns for the event.  The second one was made of die, computer parts, etc.  It kept falling apart.  The third crown got crushed on my way up to Gen-Con (that's the last time I let someone else pack the car).  I was going to weave the crown Zarathustra made in with the fourth crown, but it got covered up by costumes and I couldn't find it.

The technology set-up would also be really important to making sure things run smoothly next year.  My husband was happy to help out this time, but having someone else there with the sole purpose of taking care of the technology would definitely alleviate some of the concerns of making sure everything works correctly.

wow!!!  crown drama!  If someone can design the crown, I can find a way to make it.  I'm pretty handy with stuff.

But if you don't mind having an actual performance for intermission, some friends and I are talking about doing a dancing with the geek stars parody thing.  One person of the couples will dress as a professional dancer, while the other is in some form of cosplay.  We thought about doing it for the costume contest, but they thought of something they would rather do, and they don't want to compete in the professional category, which next year I have to.  So I'm making my uber costume for next year.  But we still want to perform together since it sounds like it would be fun. Maybe hand out score cards to the audience so they can score the couples, which the winner would receive the golden NES controller!  hehe.

Not to worry, it would not have shown up anyhow. :-D but next year will be much better!!! :-)

Hopefully by then I will have learned how to drill dice to thread them onto things! :-) D10 jewels, here we come! :-)

LOL maybe the crown making could become a secondary contest :-D

If I had actually ENTERED the contest (good thing I didn't because I screwed my knee up the day before) I would have expected to be NOT the winner...(I mean, there can be only one.)... or two at most, right?  ok, MAYBE 3 winners :-D

anyways...until the next time, ladies :-D

pulp you did an awsome job the first time is always the roughest but as the years go on it will get better and better and I decided I will not be doing a parody lol I felt so stupid after the whole event messing up and I don't think the judges really dug me lol but I think next year I will really sing I want to try next year even though after htis year i was like never again but I had fun making new friends with the other contestants. If I can find a great phantom of the opera dress I think I would sing a phatom medly since I really do sing well but you would not be able to tell by my silly parody perfoprmance lol. I am a karaoke queen lol. Keep up the good work and next year will be a total blast!
