    Rose McGowan as... Red Sonja?

First Robert Rodriguez casts his girlfriend, Rose McGowan, as Barbarella. It's workable. I can see her pulling the role off. But now he wants to cast her as Red Sonja? Sure, she might be able to fill out the chain-mail bikini but I think I'd have problems taking her seriously as the most feared female warrior of all time.

Re: Rose McGowan as... Red Sonja?

Not that I had anything specifically against Rose, but I could not stand Planet Terror (or any of the others on that disk, to be honest). I considered that whole collection to be a waste of a couple hours. A Quenton movie, if I remember... not overly impressed. Maybe it didn't really show her acting abilities, but I doubt it hid them much either. A fearsome warrior? I didn't think so. The MOST FEARED female warrior of ALL TIME? I don't see how they could possibly pull that off.

Quote from Dragons of the Dwarven Depths, p259 ... Tas and Tanis talking after Tas says a prayer for the massacred Gully Dwarves.
"It was good of you to think of that," said Tanis. "None of the rest of us did."
"You're busy thinking big things," said Tas. "I keep track of the small stuff."

Re: Rose McGowan as... Red Sonja?

She was in both of the Grindhouse movies, one of which was directed by Tarentino, the other by Rodriguez. I enjoyed both of the movies a lot. They were just plain fun and a sardonic nod -- and knock -- at those genre movies of the '70s. For shows that don't really require a lot of effort or depth, McGown can work. But something like Red Sonja, even though it probably won't be a "deep" movie, no. She won't work.

For me, a large part of that will be her voice. It has a combination of "little kid" and "nails across the chalkboard" (to me anyway) that makes people cringe, not inspire fear in enemies.

Hearing McGowan as Red Sonja kind of made me cringe but you never know I guess. The stars could align and she could do a good job. BIG stretch but you never know I guess. I wonder if she's going to have to get crazy amazonian buff for the role though.

Planet Terror was great. But McGowan as Red Sonja? In a word, no. Too skinny, too modern looking.

I have to agree that she was okay in the Grindhouse movies--and of course I love her in Charmed, but as Red Sonja ?!?! Indifferent

Okay, so who do we think CAN play the role?  I am thinking some wrestler chick, would be a good start.

Re: Rose McGowan as... Red Sonja?

I always imagined Sonja as a tall girl with a slim but muscular physique. I don't think of Rose as that. But at least they're not casting Angelina Joile again.. man she's in too many action movies. I think they need some fresh faces.

Re: Rose McGowan as... Red Sonja?

I like Rose....alot. She's a Hottie McHottentot. but she is NOT red sonja  LOL

Brigiette Nielson was Red Sonja. Tall, amazonian, buff but still very feminine. Fierce of face and strong of voice. Rose is a tiny girl with a high soft voice. I'm just gonna go with Nah.

I hope they can find a woman a little more fitting.

Maybe Tricia Helfer. She'd have to bulk up a little probably.

I don't know how much of an actress Christie Hemme might be -- or how tall she is, for that matter -- but she might fill the bill.

How about Kristanna Loken?  She looked pretty fit and mean in T3, plus she is 5' 11".

She might make for a good Wonder Woman, too.

Say, what about Mary McCormack of In Plain Sight? She's a little bit older but she also has a bit of edge to her, too, something that might work for Red Sonja.

What about Miranda Otto (Eowyn from LOTR)? She's not buff, but she's got previous sword acting experience at least.
