Have you played ATARI today? - Classic Video gaming at Gen Con!

Just wanted to let you guy know, in addition to the free play offerings Derek has mentioned, there will be a FREE PLAY ATARI 2600 with some of your favorite games!  Including Pitfall, Warlords (great breakout style game that FOUR people can play), and the ever popular combat.

There will also be a Famicon, which is essentially a Japanese Nintendo, with some fun, and nearly impossible to play, Japanese Famicom games.

Do you have a favorite old atari game you'd like to play?  Post it here and we'll see if we can dig it out for you.

This is a trial thing this year; so if you're interested in gaming old school style, please stop by the Egame arena and check this out.  If it's popular, we can have even more classic gaming next year.

Re: Have you played ATARI today?

Fond memories - actually, for both me and my wife - one of the few games she played.  She had a thing for Asteroids.

Me, I preferred Adventure (otherwise known as D&D for wusses).  My brother and I once were up playing Pac-Man for hours - I had a route that was great for clearing the board and gaining lives, he had a route that was riskier but was great for catching ghosts and running up the score.  That was a terrible version of the game.  Yar's Revenge was cool.  Track and Field ruined a joystick or two.

I also vaguely remember mapping out almost the entire game of Pitfall before getting bored.

I am NOT a civilized man.

I remember playing Berzerk for too many hours at a time. To this day if I see a yellow happy face shirt or whatever, I immediately think of Evil Otto.

Re: Have you played ATARI today?

I've got Kaboom, I've got Bezerk, and I have Adventure.  Yar's Revenge was one of my favorites; I have one cartridge, but it's a little damaged, and I'm not sure it'll work.  I'm having a devil of a time finding Pitfall for some reason; I can't believe I won't be able to find it, but I do have Pitfall 2 standing by just in case.  Anyone else have any requests?

I'm bringing multiple joysticks and multiple paddles, still, please try to be gentle with this stuff, ok? It's all antiques, believe it or not.

Jstr, you're more than welcome to bring any games you like!  However, I do have to let you, and anyone else know who is bringing games, that you do bring them at your own risk; Gen Con can't be responsible for anyone else's cartridges or accessories.

I have hundreds of unique games for the atari (which is why not finding pitfall is particularly annoying).  If anyone has a game they miss and want to see, just let me know.  If it's UBER rare (though, like my Mr. Do's Castle), I probably wouldn't bring it.

Yup, I knew this would be a popular one, and I already packed it and it's on its way, as I noted.  I might dig out an extra copy though since I know it will be a popular one.

I enjoyed Enduro and Pole Position. Defender was a pretty good console adaptation, too. I liked Raiders of the Lost Ark, but found it darn near impossible to play. Asteroids was a fun play. If you're looking for a good 2-player classic, I strongly recommend Combat.

River Raid, Joust, Missile Command, Space Invaders and Haunted House are also fun games.

I packed River Raid, Missle Command, Space Invaders, and Combat already.  I think Raiders as well.  I will see what else I can I can pack off your list.

I loved Raiders; I totally finished it many times.  The hardest part was near the end when you had to get sucked into that cave, that was darn near impossible.

My brother and I played Raiders so many times, the cart eventually "melted".  The problem I had with it, was we couldn't figure out if we won or not.  We got the parachute, dropped down to the right "rock" that the Headpiece told us to go to, used then tried to use the shovel.  Couldn't figure out what was going on after that but we always got raised up to the Ark at the end.

Someone should probably print out the instructions for that one to have onsite.

Re: Have you played ATARI today?

Ok, so very oddly; I could NOT find Pitfall; I'll look again tomorrow, but I did pack Pitfall2 at least.

Last chance to request a specific cart; please let me know if there's something you'd like to see.

Guys and Gals, this is sort of a test thing this year; if it goes over well, we can hopefully have more classic video gaming next year.  Soo, if you want to see this kind of event at Indy again, please stop by the egame arena and check it out, and/or email the Events team when you get back if you enjoyed having this onsite.  If there's no interest, there's no point in bringing it back, but I THINK this is something people will enjoy.

Re: Have you played ATARI today?

Question: did you also have Super Pitfall?

What about Star Raiders? I really liked that game. Some of the old Atari arcade translations would be neat, too. Centipede was especially fun, even if the graphics weren't quite up to arcade snuff.

Re: Have you played ATARI today?

So I just finished playing Dig Dug on Mame and opened up the forums and saw this thread, how coincidental!?!?!?!?!?

Although my Atari 2600 is long gone, one of my most favored games was Demon Attack by Imagic! Wouldn't it be amazing to see people playing that game again?  Simply one of the best games ever made for the limited resources of the 2600.

While I think of it, wouldn't it be sweet to see Nolan Bushnell at Gen Con?
