Go to Yats. I don't care that its too far to walk. Just go to Yats. You will not be disappointed.

What is the type of cuisine??

Yats is a Cajun place noted in the past for its low prices and flavor.

This is a great thread, thanks for all the input.  I figured since I have been to every Indianapolis Gen-Con that I already knew all the places to eat, but I certainly still had some surprises waiting here.

Still, Steak n Shake, while not spectacular, does make a decent chicken sandwich, and a milkshake is a great thing at 4am.

Californians are to Burritos, and Philadelphians to Cheesesteaks, as "Normal, Illinois"ians are to Steak 'n' Shake.  You are never going to find better chili anywhere (and I do not mean at a fast food place, I actually mean anywhere [I may be biased {though sometimes the person making it waters it down to a soup consistency and then it is just average}]), and while they do have great chicken sandwiches, their steakburgers, oddly, are better if you ask me (particularly the Frisco Melt).  Anyone who has never been to a Steak 'n' Shake is, in my opinion, missing out on the best cheap food at the convention.

So have I, but the locals know the new places that open, and the favorites that close. Every city has many openings and closings; I am thankful that most of my favorites are still there and I have NEW places to go to.

Re: Wheres a good place to eat and drink?

A few years back, I went with a few friends on a Friday night to the Rathskeller.  The Rathskeller is a hike from the ICC and packed with collage kids not gamers.  We had a beer and decided to leave, was not worth the walk. On the walk back we found the Chatterbox Jazz club.  Nicer crowd and some local jazz talent was playing.

    Bonesaw:

I really want to check out the Rathskeller because of the biergarden and fantastic beer selection. I'm a little worried about the price though. Nothing sounds beter than hanging out outside tossing back a few after a long day at the con. Hopefully, since it is a little out of the way it won't be too crowded.

I had thought the Rathskellar was a good German restaurant also. I was thinking about going there Tuesday night.

Chatterbox Jazz club, huh. Do you remember the address??

Good News (or Bad) about GenCon Dining Options

I don't think anyone else has mentioned this:

Indy's "Devour Downtown" Restaurant Week has been moved to August 10 - 23, this year.  Participating restaurants offer 3-course suppers from a selected menu, usually for $30 per person.  (Lunches are sometimes available, I think for $20 per person or $30 for 2.)

If you are planning to visit any of the restaurants shown on the web site, you might be well advised to make reservations...

By far my favorite dining experience in Indianapolis and I split my time equally between there, and the Slippery Noodle.  If you go to Oceanaire, I recomend sitting at the Oyster bar itself, the service is blindingly fast, you get your monies worth for the food, the food is amazing, the bartenders better.

Don't forget to get their Chocolate Mousse for desert.  Even Chocolate haters love it.  Listen to your Server or Bartender their suggestions are definitly the best, and I've taken people there that DESPISE seafood, and they are begging to go back.  The Hosts/Hostesses are super friendly as well, even to me and I look like a Pro Wrestler with a Hell Angels Schtick.

Thanks for that info. This week was our restaurant week here in Columbus.  I'd love to get a chance to try out some of the indy restaurants menus.  I assume theres goes to charity to feed families in need as well since the website is almost identical to ours (http://www.restaurantweekcolumbus.com)

Their beers matched the prices at my work, and we are a Nightclub. I can't remember if they do pitchers (Cheaper), but 6 bucks a pint , when they make their own beer, is pretty up there in $$$. Pretty good beer, though. As I know that some folks will just 'have to' defend this, the local microbrew places in Berkeley (Across the Bay) are more like 4 bucks a pint, and this is the suppossedly hyper-expensive Bay Area.

Here in Wisconsin, most places do $2.50 pints while many have lower price specials. $1 pints during Happy Hour which is really 5pm-7pm for most places. The place down the road from my house has this special everyday. $1 pint for 1st hour, $1.50 for 2nd hour, then max'd at $2.

Did anything go into the Hyatt where McDonalds was? Is there another McD's near the ICC?

Rex - how are they with allergies? It seems like a great place, and I'd love to go there with my husband for our 'date night', but I'm allergic to shellfish. Will it be safe for me to eat there? (I have trust issues with restaurants, having gotten dishes with shellfish in them even after informing the staff that I'm allergic.)

Mrs. GG and I went to Barcelona Tapas Friday night.  While it is not exactly close to the ICC it is well worth the walk.  It is my new favorite place to eat in DT Indy.  Very veggie friendly as well.

I wouldn't sit right next to the Oyster bar then I would get a table and if you tell them you are allergic to the shell fish (and one of my party was last time I was there), they do take extra care to not poison you.  Probably the best Staff I have ever seen and I've been around.
