    Anime newbie...

Aside from seeing Ninja Scroll (Wow, 15 years ago maybe?) I really know jack squat about anime..  I really cut back on my schedule for GenCon this year so I can wander around more and try to see more.  My question is:

If you could suggest 3 anime titles to watch pre-con what would they be?

Thank you all in advance for your suggestions.

Only 3? Come on, be fair. Say atleast 5. Did you like Ninja scroll atleast?

and you will get a huge range of answers back if you notice the other threads of suggestions of what to have available at this years con..so, since you've already mentioned Ninja scroll..

    Akira
    Lain
    FLCL
Ghost in the shell (hence the avatar)
    Grave of fireflies

But honestly this is a very tiny list of many many many great Animes, and your going to get completely different suggestions from the next poster.

But, I would atleast give us more info..you into SIFI, war, Vampires, High tec, everything?

Good idea.  I guess it would be better if you knew what I was into.

I did like Ninja Scroll.  I am mainly into the fantasy genre, I dig Sci-Fi as well.  Vampires could be cool.  War and High Tec... not so much.

    Thanks!

Then Vampire Hunter D will be sure to pelase.  And with all due respect to our resident anime aficionado (aka addict) KatsObsession, Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away/Howls' Moving Castle has to be on that list, as does the Berserk series.

Grrr...I was getting to all that. Stick out tongue

Anyway, what he said.  You cannot go wrong with anything from Hayao Miyazaki.

      Cool

What can I say, 'I have longed to challenege you.'  Anywho, an anime-based RPG called 'Big Eyes, Small Mouth' can give you ideas.

    So many choices...

Record of the Lodoss War:  classic D&D inspired fantasy adventure, I like how v1 has a big fight then goes back to show how they got together.

Rurouni Kenshin:  action/comedy; samurai w/ a violent past that now uses a reverse-bladed sword to protect people

Shira no toki: 3 dvd series, iirc, each following the next decendant using an unarmed martial art style

Get Backers! : you lost it? they'll get it back although it may not pay the bills; lots of action, comedy and...(gulp)....Dr Jackal...AAhhhhhh!!!!......

    Re: Anime newbie...

Cowboy Bebop is one of the best anime out there, and it's sci-fi but not hi-tech, really.

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend Scrapped Princess, Berserk and Twelve Kingdoms for fantasy. The latter two may be a bit slow, but they are worth it, and the former is both a ton of fun and gorgeous.

To get a bit obscure, if you liked NInja Scroll, you might want to check out Twilight of the Dark Master. And if you like ninjas, there's always Naruto. It may get bogged down in filler more than a few times, but when it's on, it's on.

I could probably give better recommendations when I'm at my computer or I can see my DVD shelf, but those are a few more titles to check out, at least.

My husband and I definately second the reccomendations of Cowboy Bebop and Twelve Kingdoms. Ghost in the Shell is excellent especially Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (laughing man story line). More recently we got into Ergo Proxy. That was cool. If you're interested in twisted story lines Paranoia Agent is really good. Not as much action but great plot. -SIN

    Re: Anime newbie...

    Three anime eh......

Voices of a Distant Star (watch the subbed version for the best experience).  A 30 min short about a literal long distance relationship.  Mecha included.

Morobito - Guardian of the Sacred Spirit: Great animation and storytelling.  The story about a female warrior, Balsa, that is trying to atone for past sins by now being a bodyguard.

Crest of the Stars - Seriously you OWE it to yourself to watch this one.  I put this up there with Cowboy Beebop as essential anime viewing.

All are available on dvd.  Enjoy!

I would agree with the others about Cowboy Bebop, a must watch.  As also mentioned, anything by Miyazaki is also excellent.  I would also throw out Samurai X, Berserk (If you don't mind being suckerpunched by an "ending"), Fullmetal Alchemist or Vision of Escaflowne.  Hellsing or Blood would be good for vampires.  Plus I want to throw my plug out for Ghost Hunt, a series that didn't get much notice.  But you probably can't miss with most of the tiles that have been mentioned previously either.  Sorry can't stop at three, could go on and on and on.....

Am I alone in not liking Cowboy Beebop? I still remember the first anime series I ever saw, Legend of the Four Kings. Don't know many others that have seen that one though. Sad

I really like the hard SF Space titles "Planetes" and "Moonlight Mile". I also like Blue Sub 6, best jazz soundtrack from Japan. I don't know if anyone mention this but the movies of"Ghost in the Shell" and tv shows have the same chartacters but happen in two different timelines. It's abit confusing but its still great.

In deference to Derek, how 'bout some Azumanga Daioh.  One of the funniest, IMHO.

A couple of things I just saw Guren Laguan, which has a really goofy first series and a really awsome second series.
