    Tom Javoroski:

    Hey WoodForSheep...

You're a member of the Yahoo group with Wells? If you get a chance, could you tell Wells that people aren't upset at him? At least, I'm not, and it doesn't seem like anyone else here is. I have no problem with Wells and his group doing whatever they want to do at Gen Con. That's the point of Gen Con...enjoy it how you want to enjoy it.

The problem is the journalist. We all know that there are people at Gen Con who do things that even normal Con-goers think are strange...but most of us don't care. It's when those people are painted as representational of everyone that we have a problem.

In fact, let me retract that. I don't think you could pick ONE person or group, at Gen Con, and say that they are representational of the 'average' Con experience. If you picked a t-shirt and jeans role-player, then the mini-gamers and full-time swag hunters and card gamers would be saying "what about us?" I think that, in a way, everyone at Gen Con thinks everyone else is 'different'. And that's not a problem.

Again, it's the journalist. If you could tell Wells that if you get a chance, I'd be grateful. I don't want the guy thinking that people think it's his fault. He doesn't have to apologize for how he enjoys Gen Con.

I'll back that up.  My problem's with the writer, its certainly not with the guy that he went around with.  I don't think anyone denies that there are people in the group that are different, we just don't want articles typecasting ALL of us as the same.  We're all different and proud of it!

Re: Response from Mykal Wells regarding Indiana Monthly Article

I mentioned Mykal Wells, although not by name, in my message to the magazine, but I can certainly see that a journalist of such poor quality might well manipulate the interviews and conversations.  My response was to the way the person was presented (especially as being indicative of all gamers), and not the person, whom I have not met nor talked with.  I doubt that came through in my post, so I am saying it explicitly here.

Re: Response from Mykal Wells regarding Indiana Monthly Article

Here's what I sent to Indianapolis Monthly:
Considering that GenCon draws 35,000 people who spend tons of
money in Indy, I'm surprised that you featured such a negative article
about it. It appeared that the writer tried at every opportunity to
insult GenCon-goers. He stereotyped them to the hilt, questioned their
hygiene, called them nerds, and was just generally an *** in that
article. Yes, some gamers don't bathe as often as they should at
GenCon. And yes, most gamers are male. But considering how lucky Indy is to
have GenCon, I'm surprised you insulted it as much as possible. You might
think twice before making such sweeping generalizations. Or maybe you
should have had a gamer write that article. It's obvious the writer
thinks GenCon is a waste of time, and that's just sad. This could have
been a great article, but you just reinforce negative stereotypes and
    make fun of gamers.

And yes, I'm a gamer. Female and 36 years old. Come find me when you
want to write a balanced article on GenCon.

    NDGeekboy:

The way I read the story, I thought that Wells was a composite of stereotypes, just another piece of the fiction, but I guess I was wrong on that point.

Still, it looks like this writer may have opened the IM up to a little bit of libel.

Yes and no, depending on what the writer changed/ignored.

If the writer changed a line that Wells said completely, that's libel.

Picking and choosing is poor journalism, and I'd never hire that guy again, but *technically* it's not libel.

I thought that casting a subject under a false light also passed the test of libel.  (Too many years since any journalism classes.)

    Generichick:

Either way - the writer is not very good at what he does.  If he's trying for the sarcastic, "I thought gamers where just these guys who sat in mom's basement and congregate every year for gaming and sex" and then at the end changes his mind to find out that hey, most gamers have good jobs, are not social rejects, and have never lived in mom's basement, thus shattering sterotypes - he failed miserably.

If he was trying for a realistic bit of journalism, he failed miserably.

Any good writer would have interviewed more than one person.  Any good writer would *notice* what is going on around them - which would have included the Nascrag guys being married and having the aforementioned rings on their fingers.  Any good writer would have double and triple checked anything they wrote before publishing it, unless said writer wants to work for the STAR - in which case they aren't a writer, they are just a hack.

Since our writer did none of the above, I choose hack.

Agreed.  If this character just wants to make a quick buck to keep some food on his table, maybe he should try for the Inquirer.  But then - they might've turned him down, too.

I wonder what the IM would do if a couple hundred gamers descended on their offices <eg>

Maybe that can be an official post-stink event :-) Round up all the con-goers you can find, and pay a visit to the office. Eh, they're probably closed then. Might have to make it pre-stink.

That's how some Japanese view the word, "otaku."

Jeez, this Indy Monthly article reminds me of when the Japanese media spoke of the child serial killer, MIYAZAKI Tsutsutomu and Comiket (Comic Market, kinda like GenCon, except with comics and people writing their own comics and such). =|

    Ugg...

That's cool that Nuvo will be covering GenCon Indy. =P

No, it definitely happens.  I know I have had many opportunities at every con I've ever been to.  In fact... there is this wonderful and charming guy I met in 2004, we are going out on our "third" date this year.  Does an entire con count as one date?  This time it might actually become a relationship, that will be decided after the con.  We've actually planned quality time together into our schedules this year.  The two years before that we just had random encounters/meetings with each other when we had free time.

    Mike Wells' response

I got this from the thread on ENworld which refers to a Yahoo group.

"Response from Mykal Wells regarding Indiana Monthly Article"

    From here: http://community.gencon.com/forums/...ShowThread.aspx

Mykal Wells sent this message to the Gaymers Yahoo group

Hello. I feel uniquely qualified to comment on this subject.

You see. My name is Mykal Wells. I've gotten more than a few angry
letters in the last 2 days.

I would just like to throw in my two cents.

Revenge of the Nerds is complete garbage of an article. I accepted an
invitation to allow the Indianapolis Monthly to join me at Gen Con
2005 to see how Gen Con is experienced from the inside by an average
gamer. That being said I do not apologize for what I *actually* said
and did (which is some but certainly not all of it). I was being
myself, that was after all the point, and I won't apologize for that.

However, the IM turned it into a heinous and hurtful piece of trash
that I'm ashamed to be apart of. It seems mostly composed of
    misquotations, fabrications, and outright lies.

I, personally, feel slighted by the article, but most of all it
misrepresented my friends and my community at large. That is
unacceptable. My friends and I are currently discussing a proper
course of action for this downright vicious and unwarranted article.

*also I would like to declare that I am not nor have I ever been a
diety of any proportion... To the best of my knowledge*

It's sort of sounding like this "reporter" might be suffering from a bit of envy and self-loathing.  I also have to wonder just what sort of editor he might have.  GenCon must do some advertising in IM; wouldn't this be akin to biting the hand that feeds you?

I can see the headlines now..

Gen Con Attendees Lay Siege to Indianapolis Monthly Magazine

Much to the consternation of local police, the rioters actually assembled a fully functional trebuchet which they used to bombard the magazine offices with boxes filled with copies of Dangerous Journeys.

In other related news, Tony Rehagen was tarred, feathered, and run out of town by several thousand angry gamers.

One has to question the wisdom of an individual willing to risk the ire of tens of thousands of people that will be showing up in a few days. Kind of the reason that we never see Rush Limbaugh attending the Democratic National Convention.

    Seriously though...

Lets say, for example, Tony had written an article where he used stereotypes, just for the sake of argument, about a religious group. Making vulgar references to this religious group, their activities, and members. I think it would be fair to say that no reputable magazine would have printed it. Why? Because, you can’t malign certain groups. However others, such as gamers, are perfectly fair game. For the simple reason, its ‘fun’ to be mean spirited to ‘geeks’ and ‘nerds’.

As a gamer for more than two decades, I can tell you that this is really nothing new. At the root of it, we have fun in an activity that they do not understand nor are they interested in learning about. Their mean spirited attack on us is basically their attempt to build themselves up at our expense.

I would suggest that you shrug and walk away.

    All the best...

"I suggest you shrug and walk away".

Thus allowing the problem to perpetuate itself.  Not to mention the small fact of allowing the greater harm of making fun of people to be considered to be 'okay'.  Wasn't there some little problem with that kind of action causing a small reaction at a school called Columbine? Lettting people think that making fun of other people is "okay" is NEVER alright. We should never just shrug and walk away when we see people doing things wrong.  I don't.  Yes, it means I occaisionally have more problems than I would if I ignored the injustices being done around me.  But I am happier with who I am.

I understand where you are coming from Jirel, I really do.

Yesterday, I ran across a blog by a game designer, in which he referred to me in an unflattering manner. Now, do I name, names, point fingers, call a lawyer, rant about my fellow game designer on forums, fire off an email, etc..?

None of the above. Why? Because, in spite of any personal gratification that would come from responding, it won’t change anything except waste my time and ratchet up my blood pressure. Both of these individuals have their opinions and I just don’t believe that there is anything that I can say to alter said opinions. The damage is done, their opinions have been made public. We can’t undo it.

Now with all of that said, I just sent a letter to Peter Adkison with the pertinent information concerning this article. It has the addresses for the article, this thread, and even a cut and paste full length version of the article in case he doesn’t like the jazz music at IM.

Maybe I couldn’t resist just tilting at a windmill, one last time. Wink

    All the best…
