Shameless Event Plug - Survivor: GenCon

A friend of mine is running a really terrific event this year based on the Survivor TV show.  It's listed as a LARP, but there's no characters in use and no system knowledge (aside from basic knowledge of how the TV show works) required.  I'm helping with the event, and I figured I'd contribute a shameless event plug. :)  We both participated in this event a few years ago; the previous organizer typically runs it at Origins.  It was an amazing experience that we still tell stories about in our gaming and reality TV circles.

Generally, the game is going to be run just like the show.  We will have N number of contestants that will get divided into X number of tribes.  There will be immunity challenges, reward challenges, and tribal council.  My friend, Dave, has run Survivor sim games online for several years.  He is awesome at designing challenges, so I expect that they'll be really fun.  If you ever wanted to see how well you'd do at Survivor, this is your chance!

We have some information posted on the event site at:

    http://survivor-gencon.livejournal.com/

There's a FAQ there as well.  You can also post questions here, and I'll answer them here as well as adding them to the FAQ on the site.

Here's the event info from the catalog:

    Event IDLRP00101
    TitleSurvivor: Gen Con 2007
    TypeLRP
DescriptionOutplay, outwit, and outlast your opponents in this adaptation of the reality competition television classic. Win challenges and you earn immunity for your tribe or for yourself; lose and risk being eliminated by a fateful vote at Tribal Council! Will you be named sole Survivor? (Prizes will be awarded for top two or three finalists, depending on total number of participants.)
    Duration8 hours
    Date8/17/2007
    Time10am
    Age13+ Preferred
    Experience LevelNewcomers welcome
    Game SystemAdapted from televised competition
    EditionCurrent
    Cost$15.00
    Event Limit18 players

I should also add that this will be a great event for a non-gamer friend or family member.  So long as they know or like the TV show, they'll be just as likely to win as anyone else. :)  Also, we worked out that we will definitely provide prizes greater than the event cost to the top 20% of finishers, and if we max out the event, we'll make sure everyone gets something, similar to the graduated cash prizes for the TV show.

Can you give some examples of what the challenges will be like?  I assume they will be less physical than the show due to the fact that it will be an indoor event.

Do you know if this will be run at Origins as well?   My sisterinlaw is a huge survivor fan and we are taking here family to Origins this year... but mnot to GenCon.

That's reasonably true.  Obviously, you won't be swimming a mile or anything like that. If you're concerned about (for example) your ability to run a mile affecting your ability to win, I don't think that will be a huge factor.  I was 2nd place in the original incarnation of Survivor: GC, and I couldn't run for more than 10 minutes straight if you paid me. :)  Well, maybe if you paid me a huge amount...but still.

In the initial incarnation of Survivor: GenCon, we had to walk between the Hyatt and the Con center to fetch food and water.  One challenge was a speed scavenger hunt in the Dealer room, so that was somewhat physical.  There was a balance challenge on a beam about the size of a railroad tie.  There was a blindfolded puzzle retrieval challenge that involved possibly (but hopefully not) running into walls. I can't say we'll be doing anything exactly like those, but those are probably reasonable examples of the level of physicality there might be.

The thing is, even if we have a challenge that might be difficult from a physical perspective, I don't think it has much to do with the ability to win in the end...if you look at past Survivor finalists/winners...they're not exactly the buff people most of the time.  And there's no way we're going to make people do something that would be overly demeaning or have a huge possibility of injury, for semi-obvious reasons.

If you have a specific concern for you personally that you want to ask about before you sign up without having to post it on the boards, feel free to PM me.

I'm honestly not sure.  The person who originally ran it at GenCon typically runs it at Origins, but I don't know if she's running it this year.

It sounds fantastic, but I can't do the 8 hours.  It overlaps with things we've already signed up for.

Are you thinking of running a shorter version of it nex year or at another con, or does it not work if its shorter?

It really can't be any shorter and still have the feel of the game.  Consider the board game Diplomacy, which takes as long if not longer, and involves almost exactly the same interactions/steps...just substituting the board movement for challenges.  Of course, keep in mind that unlike Diplomacy, you won't be playing Survivor for the entire time. :)

I don't think it's full yet if you still want to register.  Either way, people are definitely welcome to observe...we may recruit you to help us with various "behind the scenes" setup though. ;-)

Yes, yes yes!  Pick me, pick me!  I'd love to come and help, especially in the morning when hubby and nephew are going to play some naval strategy game.  I can work til noon if you find me a job. Dog

What about eating strange things?  As a vegetarian, would I not make it very far in the game?

Definitely!  We will find you a job.  It may be a little hectic at first, but we will have fun things that you can do to assist with challenges and such.

I'll try to shoot you an e-mail so we can get a dialog going toward having you help out. :)  Thanks for volunteering!

Due to the food restrictions imposed by the host site as well as numerous possible issues for players, we are not including a gross food challenge.  So, not a problem. :)

Re: Shameless Event Plug - Survivor: GenCon

Dave here. I just wanted to pop in and say hello, and to thank my fabulous co-host Tsukata for starting this thread and helping answer questions about the event!  I've been preoccupied with challenge planning and getting props and stuff like that, so I am really happy that people have been online in the meantime expressing an interest!   For those still considering the possibility of playing, as of this posting, there are still 3 pre-registration slots left.

As for the nature of the challenges, some are primarily physical (tests of agility or marksmanship), others are purely mental, and some are a mix of both physical and mental (such as 'gather all the pieces, then be the first assemble the puzzle').  The limitations of indoor space will prevent the challenges from being anything exceptionally grueling, but there will indeed be a fair bit of physical activity.  As Tsukata already mentioned, there won't be any Gross Food Challenge at all due to a combination of concern about player food allergies and the convention center's 'no outside food' policies.

I'm also happy to see an interested volunteer who would like to help out rather than play.  You're quite welcome to help.  I'm sure there will be plenty to do, since some of the challenges (and possibly a few other aspects of the game) need set-up and clean-up in between turns.  Thank you!

As for running in a shorter period of time...  the timescale is going to be very compressed, as-is, in order to get the appropriate number of challenges and eliminations accomplished within the time available, plus time for the players to hang out together and plot strategy.  Adjusting the scale (in terms of time spent and number of players) is something we might experiment with next year, depending on how things go this year.

Hey, looking forward to it!  Need any help before the event?  I'm good with computers, and pretty crafty.  I could make you an immunity necklace if you need one, and give me a basic idea of what you want it to look like.  Also props for challenges, etc.  Just let me know how I can help!
