For the full details on what I have planned, check out the blog post where I try to explain it and the thread I started in the Events forum. The short version is we're experimenting with listing free Wednesday night games in the registration system & event catalogs. What I want to talk about here is how to get involved it you're interested.
First, some basic ground-rules:
- We don't have definite space yet, so prepare yourself in case we have to say "Thanks for the interest, but I'm sorry, we just can't accommodate you this year." I'm just warning you - we're probably going to have to be more selective than we are with the normal events during the convention proper.
- All Wednesday events must be free. They can be ticketed (and will be by default) but are like seminars - tickets exist, cost $0 and reserve you a spot but certainly aren't required.
- Events should start after 8 pm. We want to make sure everyone has a chance to stop by Registration and swing by the Stink without feeling rushed.
That's the main important stuff. Other than that, remember two things: this is an experimental program this year, so expect changes and this is absolutely not mandatory - feel free to continue running your normal, ad hoc Wednesday stuff if you want to. Gen Con's not going to make you stop, or even suggest that you should do so. What we're trying to do here is offer you a chance to advertise your game to other people who might be around on Wednesday.
Okay, that taken care of, how do you get your event listed? Pretty simply:
- Fill out the online submission form as normal, answering all of the appropriate questions.
- Pick the preferred time you would like to start, but choose "Sunday" as the preferred day. Then make a note in the Other Special Requests field of "Wednesday event."
- Send me an email with the event ID and a note that this is a Wednesday game.
- I'll go into the event, edit the start time to Wednesday and set the price to $0.
Hopefully that's pretty straight-forward. Why not just add a "Preferred Day: Wednesday" option? So we don't get a flood of random event submissions - and questions about whether Gen Con is not the best five days in gaming. Especially in this first year I want to keep submissions down to a reasonable, manageable level.
Does that make sense? If not, please let me know so we can clarify and iron this all out. I want Wednesday to be a big, giant, must-go gaming party by the fans for the fans. Let's make it work beautifully so we can grow it in the future.
