BladeRunner-Press debuts 1st RPG system at Gen Con 2008

I know I said I would post something regarding this, and here's a little taste of what we will be bringing to Gen Con 08 for the first time.

We have 2 systems using the name Endless Terrors.  Endless Terrors the Miniature system is still being run this year as well by Rob.  We just liked the name so much we thought it would make a good title for our RPG system.  Endless Terrors the RPG is a Modern Day Horror game that covers the entire globe.  Don't want to discuss to much of specifics regarding the system, but here are a couple of things to tell you about the system.

     1. We are using a 'classless' system, meaning you can create or play any type of character you want.

    2.  The system we are hoping will stress role playing as opposed to roll playing.  We are working at a unique way to do all manner of 'checks' in the game.  There will be nothing in the game that relies entirely on rolling of dice.  For everything that you can do with dice in other systems, with ours, you will always have options.  I know that sounds a bit vague, but I don't want to give away too much of the actual system just yet.  I'd like to keep some of the stuff as a surprise and see how people react to it.

Here are a couple of pages from the game.

    Endless Terrors

“There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophies.” This phrase has been repeated countless times since Shakespeare wrote it back in the early 1600s.  Thousands of inexplicable events that no one has been able to solve either rationally or scientifically have occurred even to this day.   Many strange things have transpired, ranging from mysterious disappearances of people and objects, to bizarre accidents that cannot be resolved, to tragic deaths that have stumped even the most talented Crime Scene investigators.

Welcome to Endless Terrors, a foray into the unknown and unexplained world of the Supernatural. You will be part of an investigation team representing a global insurance firm that explores and solves cases of ‘questionable’ origins. Each member of your group has specific skills which supplement the effectiveness of the entire team and make for a formidable force against the elements of evil that you will encounter.

    Employment Dossier

    History of McCall International Insurance

McCallister and George Insurance was founded back in 1975 by two friends, James “Jimmy” McCallister and Richard George. The pair  had known each other since they were kids on the same Little League baseball team together in a small Indiana town. Their friendship grew throughout their teen years, but they were separated when Jimmy and his family moved to Texas. Fourteen years later, Jimmy and his new wife moved back to his home town and the two friends were reunited. Oddly, both had gotten Associate degrees in Business with an emphasis on insurance. They got jobs in a neighboring city and after a few years were able to establish their own small firm.

Richard and Jimmy knew that in order to grow, they had to do something unique to separate themselves from other companies. Soon, word got out that they would insure anything and everything, no matter how big or small, important or insignificant. This was the boost they needed and Fortune was with them: profits grew and very few mishaps befell them. In less than 10 years’ time, McCallister and George became a national corporation.  Knowing they had to expand even further, they moved their corporate headquarters to Los Angeles.

Then tragedy struck: while vacationing in Romania, Jimmy and his wife Cheryl were attacked by modern-day bandits. Not only was their vehicle ransacked and burned, but the couple was murdered by the group’s leader. Jimmy and Cheryl’s 13-year-old son was spared, however, for some unknown reason.

By the time rescuer’s arrived, alerted by the vehicle’s GPS tracker, Alex was found wandering the woods, babbling incomprehensibly about a vampire killing his parents. Even after months of intense therapy, he still held to his claim that the killer had blood-red eyes and fangs. The bodies of Jimmy and Cheryl were never recovered.

This devastated Richard. He used all the vast resources at his disposal but to no avail.  No trace of his partner or his wife were ever found and the trail grew cold quickly. The only bit of information he could get out of the locals was that the Shuvani, an old band of gypsys, were still operating in the area, though their encampment could never be located. Their leader was rumored to be some local dignitary that was in hiding.

To honor his fallen friend, Richard changed the name of the company to McCall International Insurance.  But the cause of Jimmy’s death still kept him awake at night, plaguing him with nightmares of vampires, werewolves and other monsters.  “These things couldn’t truly exist…or could they?”  How many strange claims had he filed over the years that really couldn’t be explained by science.  From this, he decided that a special department needed to be created.

At the next board meeting, he announced his plan to create a Special Claims Division. This department would be responsible for investigating those reports deemed ‘weird, strange, or out of the ordinary.’ It would be made up of people who had already had experiences with the paranormal.

Over the years, the makeup of the SCD has changed, but their mission had always been the same: prevent the future deaths of innocents from these creatures of evil.

Hope that gives you some idea as to what we are about.  Feel free to PM or e-mail me if you have more questions, and I'll answer what I can.

Wow, this looks very cool.  Have you decided on how many slots you are going to run or is that still under wraps?

Re: BladeRunner-Press debuts 1st RPG system at Gen Con 2008

Hey Braelun...glad to see a bit of interest.  And thank you for the compliment, and we think it looks very cool too!

We are planning, pending approval of course, of running 2 different scenarios twice each, so a total of 4 slots during the Con.  With our schedules though they will all be scheduled to run on Thursday, as Friday is our day of running Mini events.

We are going to run 2 different stories like I said before, to hopefully show of the versatility of the game.  Rob, will be running the more 'Serious' story, that is titled "Welcome to the Hotel California".  It is going to try and stick to a more traditional horror themed game.

I am going to be running the other story that is titled "Welcome Aboard...We're Expecting You."  That particular story will be a more tongue in cheek horror action story, with some elements of horror, but also more humor thrown in.

As with our CHILL games from past years, we are converting all of our Famous Supernatural Investigators over to our system, so you'll still be able to play as any of the Ghostbusters, The Scooby Doo gang, including Scooby Doo, the Buffy gang, the Angel folks, the brother and sister from Friday the 13th the series, Karl Kolchak, the pair from the Firghteners, Anita Black, the Frog brothers, Peter Vincent, Jack Burton, 'Ash' among others.  We are trying to keep the characters suited with the story, so of course Jack Burton or Ash won't be available characters more than likely on the "Welcome to the Hotel California" scenario, and likewise, Peter Vincent probably won't be one of the available characters for "Welcome Aboard...We're Expecting You."  Some of them however will be available for both games as they can be played both comedic and serious.

I hope that gives you some clue as to what's going to be going on this year with the game.  Hope to have a good crew for this debut, and we'll definitely want feedback from you all as well.

You should check out the show Supernatural on The CW and add Sam & Dean Winchester as characters.  The premise sounds alot like the show except without the whole corp. secret society aspect.  Sounds incredibly fun though.

Good call xMidnightxEyesx, and one of the surprises that we were planning on having, but I'll throw it out now since you already guessed at it.  We've already added Sam and Dean Winchester to the character list.  We are big fans of the show.  I've even read that they are planning on using Jason Vorhees on an upcoming episode.  Anyway, yes we are going to have them both available at the Con as characters as well.

Peter Vincent sounds familiar; can't place him though. And I've never heard of the Frog Brothers.

But I am game for some light-hearted horror! I just have to make sure I can do a proper accent this year if need be <g>

The Roddy McDowall character - that's right! Too many years since I've seen that show.

And I completely forgot about about Feldman being in that.

Don't feel bad about it...wasn't a major surprise or anything!  I actually think it's cool that people are guessing or getting things that we already did.

Yeah Peter Vincent Vampire killer and the immortal Frog Brothers...the Cory's....Yes there should be good fun, and I really do hope I get quite a few forumites to sign up, because then we KNOW we're going to get quality gamers to give us good feedback about the system.

Wow, it's SO great to see all this interest in our new game!  I'm really hoping for a good bunch of forumites to play our inagural events this year.

BHT, we are running all 4 events on Thursday, two at 9am to 1pm, and two from 2pm to 6pm.  Each slot will contain both stories, the "Welcome to the Hotel California" and "Welcome aboard...We're Expecting You."

Hope to see you all out there!

Well crap.  I'm running an event that spans both of those times.  Hopefully you can post a review of how the play sessions go.

Is there a chance that you might be putting out books or at least the rules for the system, because from the sounds of it I could definately get into running a game like that at home.

Re: BladeRunner-Press debuts 1st RPG system at Gen Con 2008

That is a most definite YES!  There will not however be any available this year, as we will more than likely be taking feedback from this year and making changes if warranted to the system.  After all we can only playtest it so much with our own group before we run out of things to look at ourselves.  Now we want an honest opinion from the gamers we are hoping will play the game to tell us what they like about it, and yes even what they hate or don't like about it so that we can make it fun and playable for everyone that loves a horror game.  We are targeting Gen Con 2009 to have the first available set to be ready for the public.

We would have liked to set up more sessions of this, but we are training new judges to run some of our miniature games, so we will be busy with that on Friday and part of Saturday.  That and I still like to set aside a LITTLE time to play myself! LOL

Hopefully next year when our new judges are more comfortable with the mini systems themselves, we can offer more in the way of Endless Terrors the RPG.

Thanks again for all the interest folks...makes us think we are going in the right direction!

I'm really excited about booth the RPG and minis system but am running so much stuf myself this year I probably won't get to play.  Are you planning running games at anyother cons?  Most particularly Origins or Mavencon?
