    Queen of Geeks Pageant

I'm new at this, so a lot is going to be played by ear.  Below is an overview of the event at the moment.  More details will be added as competitors sign on.  Italic notes are for the contestants.

The audience should feel free to participate.  I plan on having callbacks.  Spectators may be asked to volunteer for participation.  But please remember:

    No vulgar language

No throwing objects (unless of course it's part of the show)

    No grabbing of the contestants

                                                                    Opening

    Grand March of Candidates

    Introduction of Judges

    Three (yet to be confirmed)

    Introduction of Candidates

    Interview

The interview will be in the form of essay questions done via e-mail before Gen-Con; answers will be used to create a competitors profile and introduction.

    Transformation Costume Presentation and Questions

    Trivia Portion

In this part contestants will wear their best formal geek wear.  You don’t have to be dressed as a specific character but it does need to be elaborate.  You don't even have to make your own costume.  You do need to wear something that fits your body type and personality.  In a regular pageant this would the formal wear portion.

Contenders get five minutes to answer as many geek related questions as they can from three categories of their choosing.  Questions will be asked in shootout format of one minute each.  Questions outside their preferred field of knowledge will get them extra points.

    Secret Identity and Talent

    Talent Portion

In this part challengers will wear their best casual geek wear.  A costume is preferred.  If your wearing jeans and a t-shirt it better be a great t-shirt.  Above all you want to wear something that suits you and displays who you are.

Contestants have 10 minutes to display their talent.  10 minutes cover everything:  set-up, act, solicitation of audience volunteers, critics from the judges, and clearing the stage for the next act.  That way if someone needs a little more time then they don't have to worry.  The piece must be continuously entertaining, or else the grunts & henchmen will come forward to escort everyone off the stage.  This can be done as a live performance or display.  If talent is shown through a display you must provide proof that the work is yours.

I really don’t expect a lot of singers and dancers, but if that is your talent make it special.  If your talent is costumes, put on a show.  Dress up a few of your friends in your work and parade them across the stage.  If you’re an actor, don’t just do a monologue act out the scene.  Pull up adience members to be extras.  You can do a mock combat.  I’m sure someone in the audience will be more than happy to help.

Have you submitted this event to Gen Con?

If you have not submitted the event goto http://registration.gencon.com/indy/evmanage.cgi?a=add to find out about submitting events. The initial event submission deadline has passed but events can still be submitted.

Yep, it's in there. I know, because I saw it when I was browsing and thought it was a neat idea.

That it is: ZED00001 (Queen of Geeks - Audience Wanted) and ZED00002 (Queen of Geeks - Contestants Wanted).

I am curious about the posting of the rules here on the Forums because I think it's a fair bet that not every audience member nor every contestant visits the Forums. And considering there's no website listed in the description (at least not in the spreadsheet released back on Event Registration Day), will they know where to go for this info?

    Re: Queen of Geeks Pageant

As a note, 10 minutes is a LOOOONG time to expect anyone to "be entertaining" on stage by themselves, outside of being a professional.  Have you seen the talent portion of the costume contest?  That's a good basis for comparison.  3-5 minutes is a much more realistic bar to set.

No doubt. The average song runs, what, maybe 3-5 minutes?

Maybe this and the pole dancing class could get together for the talent part. Surprise

    was that too far?

When a contestant signs up they are suppose to get a message with my e-mail address.  I mainly put everything on the forums to drum up interest.

I'm not expecting people to dance around for 10 minutes.  But if someone is acting out a scene they might need a few minutes to set up the set.  The 10 minutes covers everything: set-up, act, solicitation of audience volunteers, critics from the judges, and clearing the stage for the next act.  That way if someone needs a little more time then others they don't have to worry.

Sad that it's necessary to include those guidelines.

I strongly encourage you to rethink this. Three minutes will serve you much better here.  Ten minutes is a LONG time, much longer than you think, and much longer when you consider you'll have one set after another. Try sitting still and quietly, doing nothing. Two minutes of that can feel like a long time, let along ten.

Having witnessed some really painful performances in the costume contest, five minutes of sitting in the audience as someone does a bizarre/terrible/boring routine will suck the life and fun out of the whole event. Ten minutes and you'll have a riot on your hands.

I can understand allotting ten minutes inbetween sets for including setup if necessary, etc, but the performers themselves should expect to actually /perform/ for three minutes.

Keep in mind, ten minutes would mean only 6 per hour.

This sounds like a lot of fun!! However, I agree the performance should only be 3-5 minutes. How many contestants are you hoping for?

I see this is listed as "ZED, Isle of Misfits" event. Just curious, what type of game is it?

Its not so much a game as a pageant based on some the qualities we geeks value most in a female, however ther will be a prize. The performance is limted to ten minutes, not required to be 10 minutes, for many of the same reasons that were already brought up. The 10 minutes includes set up performance and clearing off the stage. The extra time is for those that get elaborate. keep those questions coming and why watch when you can be a contestant?
