Does the Convention Center have Free WiFi?

Brining my iPhone, possibly not my computer.  WiFi availability will probably make the decision for me.

Here is the site for the convention center, looks like you'll be bringing your iphone.

I'm not sure that means what you think it means.

I would interpret that page, especially with the "call for customized solutions" sentence at the end, to mean that the ICC is rigged for it, if a convention wants to offer it to their attendees. I've been to lots of conferences where "conference pays the convention center to allow free wifi", or the conference tells you "the convention center has paid wifi through t-mobile hotspot or whomever", and also (for more computer-oriented conferences) where the conference organizers brought in their own wifi hardware and rigged it up in parallel to the convention center's equipment and said "you can either pay them or use ours for free, whatever you want...."

That seems like a question that is better asked of GenCon staff.

Well, last year I remember finding "hot spots' and being able to connected, now I don't know if it was a hotel or the ICC that I was connecting to.

Re: Does the Convention Center have Free WiFi?

There is NO FREE WIFI in the convention center.  My understanding is that there are "pay for play" hot spots in the convention center, but I do not know the rates.

In the past, Gen Con has been able to partner with a local Indy wifi provider to provide limited free wifi hotspots near the convention center, but not IN the convention center.  I do not know if that will be the case this year, and I would assume not unless we hear otherwise.

A hotel may provide free WiFi in its lobby, as the Mariott does, for its guests, or free or paid hot spots.  But there is no free internet in the convention center.

Re: Does the Convention Center have Free WiFi?

I used it a couple of years ago...I believe it's something like $10 for the day.  (I could be mis-remembering and it was $10 for the entire con, but I'm pretty sure it was something around $10/day)

Works well, but only in limited areas.  If it was everywhere, I'd more seriously consider it.  Based on my experience, I'd say it's not worth it.  Though, I'm bringing my Bold this year so using the Wifi is probably cheaper than trying to pay roaming charges.

Last year I remember having to log into work during the con and I found free wireless in the Marriott lobby. There were a few spots where I could pick up something, but not enough to work on. I know several of the coffee shops, McDonalds, etc has free WIFI as well, but not sure about the downtown ones. However, I'm sure if you have to connect and you're willing to hike a bit, you're find something on the circle area. Too popular area for working lunches not to have WIFI somewhere.

The food court in the ICC is one of those pay-for-play hotspots. My buddy signed up for it last year and that was the only hotspot we could find anywhere in the ICC. If anyone knows the other pay-for-play hotspots, we should compile a list here. That way if one of your group does buy wifi for the weekend at least you'll know where you can or can't connect.

Not ICC specific, but here is a link for free wifi in downtown Indy:

Well, if they don't iron out the bugs in the wifi before it his the streets then it's gonna be one *short* struggle.

There are very few FREE things at GenCon.  I guess the bathrooms are free in the ICC and air is free, but nothing else.

Think again!  Gen Con has to pay extra for that air conditioning. :)  So, the air does cost.

I do believe she was being humorous, although I'm sure it's true that Gen Con has to pay extra for AC.

Yes, that was a vague and apparently poor attempt at humor. Oh well.

It is obvious we are both faring poorly in this joke laden thread.  Folks, feel free to mention this thread to the Customer Service staff at GenCon for a free odd look.

Re: Does the Convention Center have Free WiFi?

Marimacc's comments about the "free air"  did make me smile, if not laugh.   Last GEN-CON I lugged my laptop around most of the time and found a few wifi hot spots in the convention center.   I remember one was outside the Sagamore Ballroom.  I logged in hoping for free WIFI since i wanted to find out anything about DnD 4.0.   Sadly I found it cost money and was too cheap to pay.
