That's one thing that I've never taken part in, simply because I'm normally at the Con by myself or if not, I'm with someone who is less than enthusiastic about the whole thing. Would be a cool thing to experience though - I always laugh at it as I walk by, and the people pleading to be let free. Stick out tongue

I wonder if you could have yourself arrested.

If you really wanted to, I'm sure taunting the Klingons would do the trick. Wink

How do they go about finding the people to arrest?  You better hope your target stays in one place a bit.

Here are the offical rules I found from last years forum:

    Official Rules

    The Jailing process

You can have someone jailed at the donation of $1.00 per minute for a minimum of 5 minutes or $5.00. Any additional time is $1.00 per minute. There will be arrest forms (warrants) available at the table next to the jail. We will ask you to fill out the warrant of the accused. The warrant will require:

    * Accused name: Actual name please but  you can also include their fandom name
    * Date: Self explanatory
    * List of Crimes: This little section is the meat and potatoes of the warrant. This is what is read aloud so everyone around them so that they know exactly why he is being arrested. We like it when a little creativity is put in the warrant; it makes it a little more interesting by the various reactions the accused makes as the crimes are read. So please be creative.
    * Minutes: This is the amount of the donation you are making. In the past many have pulled money together from other friends to increase the initiative jail sentence. In fact I have seen a Game master serve hours in jail. Just goes to show…GM’s are only god in game sessions.
    * Magistrate signature: This is not for you to sign. There is an acting Magistrate at the table; he is the one to sign it. Note: If you do happen to sign it then you have just earned yourself some time in jail. But since we doesn’t want you to be alone we will still arrest the person you where going to have arrested. Oh and they will get the warrant that you signed. For the record this is your only warning.
    * On the back we ask for a description and location of the accused. It helps us if someone can accompany the jailers to point out the accused from a distance. We do try to respect ones amnesty.

    Some additional rule or guidelines:

    * Retribution: It is our little way of getting even; it follows the same guidelines as warrant except you won’t know who the person that arrested you is until they are in jail and even then can you really be sure it was them.
    * Arresting celebrities and Gencon Staff: Now I know I am not the only one to wants to see most if not all celebrities /Gencon staff locked up in our jail. But not all celebrities have the time to spend in jail. If you would like to arrest a celebrity or staff member it will need to be arranged with their approval. Work with the Gencon Liaison assigned to the person or Gencon staff to see if they would be willing to do it for charity. Most of them are busy but you would be surprised who would make time for charity.
    * Pictures: The jailers and Magistrate do dress up for the jail it is all part of the fun. We also do not mind posing for pictures all we ask is a small donation for the picture or pictures. There is no set amount it is whatever you feel you can afford but we are there for the charity.
Hours of Operation: The jail is operational during the standard hours of the dealer’s room. Once the dealer’s room closes we are closed.

    * Disclaimer: We can not and will not force anyone to play along. If they out right refuse to play the money contributed to the jail will be considered strictly a donation. In addition, due to Gencon rules and for safety reasons we will not run or chase those that resist arrest. We will try to follow, track down, and coordinate with your friends to arrest you (and should you resist, well I would want to be you).

    ConspiracyOfOne:
How do they go about finding the people to arrest?  You better hope your target stays in one place a bit.

Typically they have the person either move their target to a designated spot for us... or they walk us close to where they are at and point them out.  The easiest method is "hey, I just found something really cool at x, can you come look at it?" or "where are you at?  I have something to bring to you... okay, stay there for a few minutes and I'll be right there".   The person arranging the arrest really needs to be able help out in luring them in for it to be effective.

The target isn't always found and when this happens we would come back empty handed.  The money is a donation to charity though so there is not gaurantee on their friend getting arrested.

For those that were not aware, the jail is actually how I got started on my Gencon journey... if not for me volunteering and coming out with them (my friends) for the first 2 years in Indy I probably never would have started going.

Cool--ty for letting us know how they actually go about the apprehension process.  That was one thing that made me hesitate in the past--I didn't know how you'd catch the criminal in question if I picked someone.  BTW--what charity is it for?

    Re: Klingon Jail and Bail

The charity is almost always the Gencon charity, so I would assume that this year it will be the one for Gary Gygax (can't remember the actual name of it off the top of my head).

I'll see if I can get a confirmation from Ed to see if the jail is happening this year.  I have not heard one way or the other and with the changes to the budget for Gencon this year I want to make sure they were given rooms and a spot.

Yes you could have. (have yourself arrested that is)

We had several people in previous years who paid and had themselves "arrested" - either to help out the charity or to try and solve the puzzle pieve that was in the Jail.

...okay, I just talked to the guy that ran the jail last year. He is going to get on this thread and post something. Who am I ? I'm the Klingon that was in the Geek Squad video of GenCon last year thats on YouTube.  - qartun

I have sad news for everyone.  There will not be a jail this year.  Due to economic reasons (gas prices, hotel costs, time off, etc) they were unable to work it out.

I guess that means I won't be able to bother someone I know from Norde's games this year.

If you can read this you are to close so back off.

    Re: Klingon Jail and Bail

Actually, you two, I HAVE that weekend off. Asked for it in advance from My manager. Thing is, now I need people to room with and a way to get there.  I can go , I WANT to go , got the weekend "free" - just won't be Klingon or working the jail this year.

Well, unless you guys really ask me nicely - I could still put on the Klingon outfit when I'm gaming and browsing the dealer's room.

That is really sad to hear, it is one of the staples of the FULL Gen Con experience--seeing folks getting arrested, having their "crimes" read to them, then watching them do silly stuff to try to get released.  Sad, very sad. Sad
