Do Badges have to be worn around the neck?

Or can I where them in like an arm band like a quaterback? Wearing things around my neck really bugs me.

Around the neck is NOT a requirement. In PLAIN and VISIBLE sight is, so an armband would be fine, some wear them as belts, some looped into beltloops, some ... you get the idea.

I use one of those retractable badge holders attached to my belt.

I loop my badge holder (nice canvas one) through my belt loop and let it hang :) As long as it's not "put away" you'll be okay.

Oo, I like the armband idea. The back of my neck always gets rubbed raw at some point, and I have to curl my shirt under, and it comes undone, and probably looks funny. Armband seems like a grand alternative. I wonder if I can rig my gencon one into an armband.

Are you using the default chain or string to hang it? You might want to look for a better lanyard. I usually use a red Gen Con one I bought a few years back; it's OK for four days but I wouldn't want to wear it much longer. I gave up on the fancy badge holder because the string it uses rubbed me the wrong way. For work I wear a softer one; the material reminds me of a shoelace. That's the best of the ones I've owned, and it's fun to spin my badge on the hanger. :)

Almost as important is the hanging height; I have a couple that are way too short, so I feel like I'm one step away from choking all the time. ::shiver::

I've seen a few people using those coil wristband/armband key ring things for badges. You'd think the badge would be too big, but I guess it worked for them.

Re: Do Badges have to be worn around the neck?

Yes, it's the handy dandy fancy one, which I like since it holds everything in one place so I don't have to carry a purse. And since I went and tried rigging a velcro thing, the arm won't work for me--it sliiiiiiides down within minutes.

Shoestring, huh? They make those in wacky colors, I'll take a look around walmart tomorrow. Worst case, maybe I can rig a softer 'back' part thing for it. In fact, hmm. I have baling twine I was going to use for the KFG part of me, so maybe combining that with a softer back. WHY don't I mess with these ideas in April, I'll never know.

Re: Do Badges have to be worn around the neck?

If it is around your neck it is easier for the badge check to see if your wearing the correct badge, weekend, day, exhibitor, etc. When you place it on your belt or somewhere not as easy to see then the checker has to stop you and make sure you've got the correct badge on. As long as its in the chest area it should be good.

I usually loop it through my belt but got tired of that.  I think I'm going to look for one to hook through my belt and probably on one of the retractable ones.  Around the neck can be rough in a mini's or some boardgames.

Or it can be used as an excuse to move your pieces around Wink

As a female... badges around the neck can detract from the outfit (ie cleavage) so I often tie it to my belt loop at my waist.

As a male I find that to be the case as well. I've been doing a lot of pushups lately and want to show off my "cleavage".

And some checkers are FAR more aggressive and obnoxious than others. Most, especially the folks actually at the exhibit hall entries, have been very friendly and polite. Some who roam randomly through the halls, however, allow that little taste of "power" to go to their heads. During the Reaper Speed Painting competition, my friend (dressed as Darth Maul) was harassed THREE TIMES by two different volunteers, who decided that of all the people there, his badge was least visible and "needed to be checked". This, of course, during the middle of timed event requiring focus and attention to detail, and even though he clearly had tickets to the event. Very nice.

It's funny... one time while playing a board game I had take it off and set it to the side.  The guy wandering doing checks started to ask where my badge was, then I looked up and he said "never mind, I know you have one" lol.  I think I know too many people.

It's sad to see actual adults who can only get a job as a badge checker.  Of course they have bad attitudes, whatever choices they have made lead them to this lofty and well esteemed position.  Just pity them.

Re: Do Badges have to be worn around the neck?

I imagine the badge checkers are volunteers. Probably jealous they aren't playing! I would be! And really, I'm glad they're there. I had to pay my money for a badge, others should too.

I keep hearing about the bad attitudes, but never encountered it, even from those players who didn't have it displayed. Just a 'pardon me, let me see badges,' and a check of the GM's tickets, and they always moved on. Even when one guy complained, loudly, about having to get his out, the checker was still polite.

Re: Do Badges have to be worn around the neck?

I had one badge checker at the exhibit hall say that my badge had to be worn around my neck, even though it was in plain sight on my belt. Mind you he was sitting down too, really it was just below being eye level for him where it was. No other checker had an issue with it being on my belt, so I acknowledge his comment, pretended to fudge with my belt, like I was listening to him, and then completely ignored his silly request once I was out of sight.
