DM Cancelled my event, what happens?

I signed up for a D&D 4e event, RPG00402, "At a Table of Truth in a World of Lies"

The DM posted on his site that he is cancelling all his events for Gencon http://www.rpgdigest.com/

So what happens with this?  Do I get a refund or equivalent generic tickets?

That does suck.  Onsite, you can take your ticket to Customer Service, where they will give you a full refund or an account credit.

I hate when this happens.  One year, I was scheduled for a Ravenloft game with White Wolf and was told 5 minutes after the start time that the game was cancelled.  Yeah, I'd be ticked too.

Atleast you were notified ahead of time so you could find an alternative to sign up for on site.

If you can read this you are to close so back off.

Yup. My very first GenCon, I showed up to a D&D game and the DM didn't show. Luckily GenCon was really nice and gave us our couple of buck back. But it still stinks when that happens.

I had a couple of no-shows last year.  I think I was reimbursed the full amount in a credit.

Yeah-I tried to do the "Boffing" last year and no one showed up.  Those of us who had tickets got refunds with no problem.

If you show and the DM is a no show, the game is canceled at that point.  You can get a refund from customer servcie onsite.  There are procedures for a no show - I think it requires the hall captain to sign off and then you go to customer servcie and get a refund.

It happened to me once - the instructor for one of the mini painting seminars had to no show / cancel.  Not really her fault, she fell and injured her back while at GenCon and had to get medical care.  As I recall the refund process on site was fairly painless.

Re: DM Cancelled my event, what happens?

Just to be clear, you would need the Hall Captain to sign off on your ticket if the GM is a no show.  If you KNOW the event was cancelled by the GM in the event system before the event time, you can just go straight to customer service to get your refund.  But, if you're not sure if he cancelled it in the system, probably best to check with the hall captain and get him/her to sign off on it.

Re: DM Cancelled my event, what happens?

There is another situation where the GM may cancel an event ... too few players. This is the most frequent reason I sign-off for refunds in the BG Hall. However, as has been pointed out previously, these refunds are cheerfully handled at Customer Service with no refund fees attached

And for the GM's out there, cancelling an event due to lack of players is not something in your control, and is in not reflected negatively on you. Very much so the opposit is true if you fail to show for your event, or cancel within 24 hours of the event. I have a list of GM's that I save from year to year of such GM's. If space considerations come down to having to make a choice, guess who's events hit the chopping block first.

It is good to know that GenCon keeps an eye out for this kind of serial behavior. I know that sometimes it can be tough to say anything -- these GM's are, afterall, volunteers -- but repeatedly no showing or cancelling games isn't fair to the players. Thanks BG Guy for watching out for us. Big Smile

Re: DM Cancelled my event, what happens?

Do you give different consideration to those who go through the motions of cancelling with Gencon and those who just no show?  I see quite a bit of difference in those 2 cases.  And for those who cancel, even if it's within 24 hours of the event, do you note the reason?

I'm just asking because I could see someone going in the "bad" list for something very much out of their control if some type of emergency occurs.

Re: DM Cancelled my event, what happens?

Yes to all the above. My 'list' includes notes as to when and why they are on the list in the first place. Also, I do not hold something on the list forever, after 2 years of non issues, they don't disappear, but I don't consider it to be a noteworthy issue, except to say they have learned from past errors.

I can not say every Hall Lead does this either. I have been in charge of BG's since before Jonni left, and that gives me a good historical perspective. Other Hall Leads change more frequently, and they may not keep such records for themselves in the first place. It is not a mandated practice by GC Staff, but such issues do go into our post show reports.
