VGL - Highlight of the Con

We went to Video Games Live tonight, highlight of the con so far.

We are considering going again for the Saturday show (yes, it was that good!) If you don't have plans for Saturday night and have an extra $22, you should head over to VGL. They gave away an awesome Razer mouse tonight to this kid that did guitar hero, the costume contest was cool too!

Go check them out (videogameslive.com) or stop by their both at the convention!

good enough to see again, but prolly not two nights in a row good.

I'll 2nd your approval.  The host was very energetic & there were a lot of GenCon-specific tie-ins.  The laser lights were synched great, the choir was dead on, & there's just something about hearing the music from HALO live that sent shivers through me.  Entertainment mixed with a multi-media history tour of videogames.

Do yourself a favor & check this show out next year.  I'm even going to see about getting a bunch of Forumites together for a group rate.

I saw it in 2006, but it was definitely worth going again, especially because they played "One Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy 7 this year, which the last time, all the Final Fantasy music was played by Martin Leung. Anyways, I was blown away :)

Yeah, I managed to sneak away for a bit on Friday to check it out and really enjoyed it, even though they made me wait until the end for my Halo fix Smile Highly recommended.

Yeah, I was getting anxious.  But those guys seemed pretty proficient in the art of putting on a show- making them wait for the hits, 'costume' changes, the 2nd encore, doing the local shout outs, etc.

the meet and greet afterwards was awesome too.. it was nice getting to chat with the performers for a minute, and they were really great and took time for every person in the line.  The guy entertaining the crowd that dressed up like Spiderman was an absolute riot as well.

Weren't there a couple of musicians outside the Dealer's Hall from VGL?  I thought I saw / heard them playing some video game music.  Pretty good but my Saturdays are usually tied up.

Yeah, he was awesome - definitely one of the highlights for the show. The crowd went wild every time he got a streak going.

Give him a high-five for having the balls (and skills) to kick it up to expert difficulty Smile

Didn't he also have a Patriot baseball hat on (which the host made sure to point out to the largely Colts audience) that caused a pretty loud chorus of 'Booos' for a bit?  Kudos to him for winning the crowd over.

Okay, I can't resist. Wasn't it a good thing you two weren't still playing Star Wars minis then?

    (Sorry, David. Just had to.)

In another light, wow. Expert difficulty? I didn't go this year to VGL, but dang. Tell him way to go and Congratulations...and things like this are GOOD to brag about!

Yes, yes!!!  You are very correct.  I was very happy for him.  It really made his weekend.  He's had it rough lately.  He's been greiving over his grandmother who died of cancer and even though it has been a couple of years, he's never quite gotten over it.  Right before Gencon, her death started bothering him again.  I'm glad he was chosen to go on stage if only to forget about things for a few moments and be a kid again...

Thank you!  When I was in the croud I was so worried he would get booed or mocked.  But he did pretty good.  He would have done even better but the system had a lot of "lag" which screwed him up and the "star power" was not working.  You should see him crank on his home system.  I so wish he made the 200,000 points.  He would have overshot that by a mile if the above had not happended.

PS:  his nickname is PURE BALLS. (and no I don't like it, but his friends gave it too him and he tried to get rid of it to no avail...)

Nah, as another avid Rock Band player, I know exactly how frustrating that can be and how easily it can throw you off your game. When I saw them wheel out the TV, I was actually worried about that, but I assumed they'd fixed it beforehand and then he did great anyway, so I figured it was fine.

One does not resist a nickname, one embraces it. Nicknames choose you. Smile

I wondered if the lag would be an issue. I thought I noticed about a minute in that the game paused for just a second, then started again. That wouldn't have much of an effect on someone playing the game at their home, but there's no way for the symphony to stop for half a second to get it synched up again. Anyways, kudos, that guy was at least as good as any of my friends.
