This is what I never understood -- GenCon is a celebration of gaming. Why not have some sports? True, some attendees do not have interest in sports, but hey, we're not all into anime or Lovecraft either! :)
I loved Dodgeball when I was a kid. I remember reading that several states outlawed the game because it was dangerous and fostered bullying. Nonsense. I was a dork and I still loved it. In fact I remember getting excited when I saw the canvas bag of kickballs in the middle of the gym when showing up for P.E., because that meant it was Suicide Ball Day!
Suicide Ball was a variation of dodgeball to be played in a gym, on a basketball court. The idea was, whichever side had less personnel, the border would move closer to them. In fact, most games featured a lone survivor crouched in the corner trying to deflect incoming balls, until the 3 minute time limit was up, where the couch yelled "NO BOUNDRIES!" and then everyone moved in for the kill.
Ah, memories.
It would be so easy to set up a room for dodge ball... but then I guess you gotta deal with the fact that hotels wouldn't be wild about us throwing around these 5 pound balls against the walls and stuff... and as for legal waivers.... good God, this is the problem with the legal system in this country. You don't have to sign a contract to go to your gym or to public swimming pool. I wish people would accept the "at your own risk" part of life.
