Any Field of Glory players attending GenCon?

I didn't see any FoG events listed, but I was hoping to meet up with some other players.  We've got a group of 6 or so players in South Bend, IN that are just getting into it.  Any pickup games going on that I might be able to observe?

What's Field of Glory, precious?  Is it crunchy, is it munchy?

Ugh, don't call me precious.  Field of Glory is a miniatures rules set covering 3000 BC-1500 AD.

I'm just getting into the game as well (books but no minis yet) and I will be at GenCon, but I'm helping with the Flames of War tournaments, so won't have much opportunity for anything else.

Hey, that's cool.  It is still a relatively new system here.  I haven't painted my army yet either, but I'm looking forward to it.  Hope you guys get something going down there.  If you're ever in South Bend, there's a few novices up that way as well.

    Nebelwerfer,

What is your overall impression of FoG over similiar historical miniatures games systems like Warhammer Ancient Battles?  A friend and I have decided to take the leap of faith after leafing through some of the books and witnessing the demise of the WAB system and its lack of support for new products (most notably the Divine Wind supplement, whereas Osprey just released the "Empires of the Dragon" book this week). My long range plans are to attend GenCon next year so if you are still playing I would be more than happy to face you on the opposite tableedge!

    Respectfully,

    KEVIN

FoG is very different from WAB.  First, the scale is larger; one stand may contain 2-4 figures and represent an abstract number of troops, opposed to WAB which is skirmish-level fighting.  Also, the base mechanic is a little different (no wounds/saves, just who won/lost the melee, pray you don't lose!) and the goal is to break the morale of the enemy army, rather than causing attrition.  You'll break and run before you lose a many stands in a battlegroup.

If you enjoy realistic, larger scale battle, you will probably enjoy it.  I would encourage you to go to the Slitherine Forums to ask around for players in CO.  It is heavily anglicized, but they're friendly enough.  When not digressing about "football."

I have played for a year plus, and go to GenCon pretty consistently.  I am a big fan of the rules, they lead to pretty clean games, not too much arguing, and as far as I can tell a reasonably accurate representation of a broad range of periods.  A fun game.  However, I can't imagine playing at GenCon, because I fly there--the odds of an army surviving a flight would be miniscule.  Strongly recommend the game.
