    Competition Rules and Regulations:

    1. Entries must be made in-person by the painter.  Entries must be the work of the painter. Any entry painted by anyone other than the entrant will be disqualified.
    2. No more than 2 entries per painter per category.
    3. We only accept Generic Tickets.  We cannot accept cash.
    4. You cannot enter winning models from any other contests, conventions, or online competitions.
    5. You cannot enter painted models published prior to Gen Con and this competition in any professional print media, i.e. manufacturer magazines or gaming material.  Online publication of your painted entry prior to Gen Con is acceptable only if done so in the spirit of receiving feedback on your work from the hobby community.  You may receive feedback from our judges, part of that online community, though our intention, as ever, is that painters provide entries previously untested.
    6. Disqualified winning entries forfeit all prizes, titles, awards, and the painter is barred from entry in future Gen Con competitions.  If an entry is disqualified, awards are given to the next winning entry.  Information dealing with an entry in this competition that may result in disqualification should be brought to the attention of Gen Con and Competition Administration immediately.
    7. All entries must be finished, including bases, within the size restrictions as noted separately for each category.
    8. Each category must have at least four entries or we will combine it with another category, per management decision.
    9.  Management determines final category placement of all entries and can change at any time before or during judging.
    10. Entries will be photographed and entry registration indicates permission for Gen Con to show them in all public media, including online and print media.
    11. Gen Con staff, volunteers, and Competition Management cannot be held responsible for damaged or lost miniatures.  We treat all miniatures with respect and will do our best to keep them safe.
    12. Gen Con employees, Gen Con Competition Management, Gen Con Competition Administration Volunteers, and Gen Con Competition Judges are not eligible for entry.
    13. All decisions of the judges and management are final.
    14. Entries must be received by 9 pm on FRIDAY of Gen Con.
    15. Entries and Prizes must be picked up by 3 pm Sunday at Gen Con, or the entrant will pay shipping and handling for their entries and prizes to be mailed to them. If we receive no replies to our attempts to contact you by phone or email by September 30th of this year, prizes will be forfeit and entries still in our possession will be auctioned.

Category Size Restrictions and Judging Criteria

Please note that measurements include any and all bases, movement trays, or display stands.  We use these measurements to determine display shelf placements and they will be strictly enforced.

    Judging Criteria:

Judging Criteria are given in order of precedence for each category.  When determining the difference between close entries, they are considered in the given order of precedence.

Technical Quality - defined as the technical proficiency used in the painting and modeling of the entry.  Obvious technical faults are mold lines, sloppy joins, rough primer, or sloppy paint.

Artistic Quality - defined as the artistic effects of the piece, including color choices, detail work, composition, and the overall effectiveness of the artistic choices made.

Unit Cohesion - defined as the unifying theme that indicates these figure belong together.  This can be done, for example, through effective use of uniforms, insignia, basing of the figures, including unifying display base if offered.

Presentation of Story - emphasized for the Diorama Category, though always encouraged for all entries, figures and basing should present to the viewer a clear and enticing story shown as a single scene.  This criteria is used to determine how well the modeler has created their storytelling scene and how dramatic or how well it pulls the viewer into the diorama.

    Single Figure

Defined: Smaller figure or animal-mounted figure, such as a knight on a horse, which fall within the size restriction.  This includes base, mount, and appendages. A competition judge will rule on any bits, such as a pole, extending beyond the size restriction, at time of entry.

    Size Restriction: 3x3x3 inches.

    Judging: Technical Quality, Artistic Quality

    Unit

Defined: Models in military ranks or groups that constitute a unit, squad, team of individuals, or adventure group. Units must include unifying base, board, or movement tray.

Size Restriction: Entry max of 10x10x10 inches.

Judging: Presentation of Unit/Group Cohesion, Technical Quality, Artistic Quality, Unit/Group Display Basing

Note: Unifying Base/Movement Trays will be considered during judging as part of the Presentation and Cohesion, though an entry will not be downgraded solely based on an obvious attempt to satisfy this rule and not part of the intended entry.  Only basing of the figures themselves will then be considered for this portion of the judging criteria.

    Machines of War

Defined: All vehicles and machines with crew.  This includes all tanks, motorcycles, ships, siege engines, all weaponry that contains or is run by one or more crew figures. Multiple freestanding figures (as in crew) must include unifying base, board, or movement tray.

    Size Restriction: 12x12x12 inches.

    Judging: Technical Quality, Artistic Quality

    Diorama

Defined: Emphasis is on the display as a focused scene telling a story with figures.  This may include battle scenes or other dioramic displays.  Must be on a unified base, figures do not need to be permanently attached to the base, but judges will take into account the technical aspect of the figures as presented with the base.

    Size Restriction: 14x14x14 inches.

Judging: Presentation of a Story, Technical Quality, Artistic Quality.

    Large Figure

Defined: Single Figures that are larger than Single Figure restrictions. Large monsters, dragons, statues, busts, large scale miniatures, etc.  Judges will make a decision on an individual basis regarding entries of smaller figures on large bases that place them in the Large Figure Category, when they would be more appropriate for Single Figure judging.

    Size Restriction: 14x14x14.

    Judging: Technical Quality, Artistic Quality

    Sculpted Figure

Defined: An unpainted sculpted single figure (referred to as a "Green") using Kneadatite or other industry-accepted mediums.

    Size Restriction: 3x3x3 inches.

All Rules and Regulations apply to this category with the addition of:

    • Pre-cast items on the entries (such as weapons)are prohibited. Exception: Pre-cast sculpting armatures (commonly referred to as "Dollies")are allowed to be used as the underlying armature as long as they are covered.
    • All entries should be presented unpainted, intheir final assembled form with base. Please note size restriction includes all basing and display stands.
    • All entries should be unsold, unlicensed, and no production molds of the figure may have been created prior to this competition, even by the sculptor for their own use. Please note Rules and Regulations on publishing and media presentation.
    • Anything that infringes on the Intellectual Property of an existing license, which inludes all video, print, and related media, will be disqualified. We want your personal creations, nothing based on artwork that belongs to the artist or another media company, unless you can prove permission. Please respect the Copyright and Intellectual Property Rights of others as you would have them respect yours.
    • This category is ineligible for the Best In Show Award.

Judging: Technical Quality, Artistic Quality, Castability.
